Photography for printing in our Journal

Size matters a great deal in preparing digital photography for printed publication. High-quality printing, as in our Journal, requires a minimum of 300 dots per inch (dpi) resolution, and you can calculate the maximum printed size by dividing the pixel size of the digital image your camera produces by 300. For example, if you shot at 2240 x 1680, that would translate to 7.46 x 5.6 inches. The photo on the cover of the Journal is usually a little larger even than that.

It is impossible to enlarge digital images beyond their original size without sacrificing resolution, and therefore quality. If you have a 4 x 5 inch image at 300 dpi, for example, if you enlarge it to 8 x 10 inches your resolution drops to 150 dpi and the resulting print becomes 'fuzzy'.

So, if you would like to see your photos in print, shoot at the highest resolution possible! The best format for us is TIF, although photos intended only for the web can be saved in JPEG/JPG format (standard on most digital cameras).

High resolution digital photos typically result in large files that are usually too big to e-mail (any file over 1 MB in size is difficult to e-mail, unless you have a broadband connection like ours). For this reason, a CD or disc is preferable unless you would just like us to look at a low resolution image first.
