This is one of Franz Jaeger's patented systems. Herold was a Jaeger tradename, and it is not clear whether Simson made it or marketed a Jaeger made gun. Franz Jaeger was our founder Dietrich Apel's Grandfather. I would like to see a clear photo of the barrel flats, but the cartridge reminds me of an 11,15x52R (or maybe 60R).

The double barrel shows 172/28 as the bore diameter. This is the old gauge measurement used between 1893 and 1912. This mark is often found on the various 8 mm rifles, of which there are several, differing in bullet diameter, case length, head/rim diameter, and shape. A chamber cast will be necessary to identify the cartridge as well as slugging the barrel, unless the chamber cast includes enough of the barrel. The drilling shotgun is 16 ga. 65mm (2 1/2- 2 9/16" chamber length), which is shorter than current standard US shells, and is choked (crown W mark), but the choke constriction is not shown. The double has been re-blued, so it is difficult to read markings on the right side. It seems I made a mistake on the drilling's rifle caliber, since it is marked 12.5, that would be the nominal caliber, and since it is marked in mm it likely has the case length also shown and R is understood, since it is a rimmed cartridge. Now, I suspect it is either 11.5x 51 R or 11.5x52R. As always, I might be wrong.
